Installation¶
This guide covers installing Better Ecology for Minecraft 1.21.1.
Requirements¶

Installation Steps¶
1. Install Fabric Loader¶
- Download the Fabric installer from fabricmc.net
- Run the installer and select Minecraft 1.21.1
- Click "Install"
2. Download Dependencies¶
Download the following mods and place them in your mods folder:
- Fabric API - Required for all Fabric mods
3. Download Better Ecology¶
Download the latest Better Ecology release from the releases page.
4. Install the Mod¶
- Locate your Minecraft installation folder:
- Windows:
%appdata%\.minecraft - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/minecraft - Linux:
~/.minecraft - Open the
modsfolder (create it if it does not exist) - Place both
fabric-api-*.jarandbetter-ecology-*.jarin the folder
5. Launch Minecraft¶
- Open the Minecraft Launcher
- Select the Fabric profile
- Click Play
Verifying Installation¶
Once in-game, you can verify the mod is working by:
- Spawning sheep and observing grazing behavior
- Watching pigs root in the ground
- Observing flock cohesion in groups of animals
Troubleshooting¶
Mod Not Loading¶
- Ensure you are using Minecraft 1.21.1
- Verify Fabric Loader is installed correctly
- Check that both Fabric API and Better Ecology are in the mods folder
Game Crashes on Startup¶
- Check for incompatible mods
- Verify Java 21 is installed
- Review the crash log for specific errors
Behaviors Not Working¶
- Run
/reloadto refresh configurations - Check server logs for profile loading messages
- Verify configuration files are valid JSON/YAML
Server Installation¶
For server installations:
- Install Fabric on your server
- Place mods in the server's
modsfolder - Configuration files are in
config/better-ecology/
All clients connecting to the server should also have the mod installed for proper visual feedback.
